Truro Choral Society with Truro Cathedral presented an evening of Cornish music and culture at a Last Night of the Cornish Proms concert in the Cathedral.
Truro Choral Society, conducted by Martin Palmer, opened the choral proceedings with a medley of Cornish songs and shanties. The evening also featured:
Camborne Town Band (directed by Gareth Churcher)
City of Truro Male Choir (led by Russell Pascoe)
Suzanne Manuell (soprano)
Victoria Stolte (viola) and Stella Pendrous (piano)
Jeremy Wan (organ and piano)
Compere Roger Bush held everything together with informative interludes and groan-inducing jokes.
The evening was dedicated to the memory of Cornish baritone Ben Luxon (1937-2024), with a moving tribute by Susanne Manuell.
A joint venture by Truro Choral Society and Truro School, more than 160 singers from Cornwall, Devon and farther afield joined our choir for a "Come and Sing Mozart's Requiem" in Truro Cathedral, led by our Director of Music, Martin Palmer.
Truro School Chamber Orchestra accompanied the performance, together with Truro Cathedral's Father Willis organ played by Thomas Dilley. The School also commissioned four soloists for the work.
During the break between the rehearsal and performance, Russell Pascoe both informed and entertained us with a lively lecture on Mozart, after which participants had the opportunity to attend Evensong. An audience of more than 200 sat in the North and South Aisles and in the Gallery to enjoy the evening's performance of the Requiem.
This was the first large-scale "Come and Sing" we have organised, and many of those taking part have kindly reported how much they enjoyed it and particularly the opportunity to sing such a major work in the Cathedral.
